Contemporary Cuba offers a handful of restrictive options for the undiscerning pallet to enjoy, typically limited in both choice and quality depending upon class and region, with the standard fare offered in the following types of venues: * Casa particular: eat in the house youre staying in for some extra money. * Paladar: private restaurant in a house. * Hotel restaurants * Dollar restaurants: inexpensive places found in bigger cities * Peso restaurants * Cafeterias * Street food * Dollar shops * Free market (Eating). HISTORY In order for the student to gain a significantly better understanding of why certain classes and regions offer certain types of cuisine, it is important to understand the background to what is known in contemporary times as Cuban food.
