It is this last fact that makes Israel stand out and it is only through pursuing the history of Israel that the conflict that have been occurring in the region make sense. Although a history of the conflict and even simply the history of Israel can help to shed light on this topic, there are certainly opposing viewpoints on this subject. At issue is whether or not there should be a legitimate state by the name of Israel. Other options include whether or not the land should be subdivided to create separate states named Palestine and Israel, or whether the land rightfully belongs to the Palestinians. II. The History of Israel: What the Fighting is all about Some who believe that the land belongs to the Palestinians call Israels control of the land an occupation. This of course implies that the Isrealis are seizing land that is not rightfully theirs. For some, the term "occupation" describes Israels control of the Gaza Strip as well as the West Bank (Karsh, 2002). These are areas that it conquered during the Six-Day war in 1967 (2002). The Egyptians who planned to attack Israel during 1967 probably never imagined what their mission would do eventually (Fallows, 2002). The Six Day War would change the map and politics of the Middle East and after its quick victory, Israel seized neighboring territory, particularly on the West Bank of the Jordan River, something that is still in dispute (2002). This third Arab-Israeli War was fought between June 5th and June 10th in 1967; this was also appropriately dubbed the Six-Day War ("Arab-Israeli," 1998).
