CRIME AND PUNISHMENT: THE MAJOR THEME AND THESIS Dostoevsky, in this major work of literature, draws upon his own experiences through being in prison. His suffering because of his belief in social radicalism had a huge influence on his writing. This book, Crime and Punishment, involves much of the argument of the dangers of rationalism and western influence and the threat they posed to Russian society. The major protagonist in the book, Raskolnikov, is the one through whose viewpoint the story is told. The story is relayed in his viewpoint, but not in the first person. As the story starts out the reader can easily see that it is Dostoevskys own story being put down on paper. We can see that he is writing about what he knows, and is using the pages of the book to come to terms with his own viewpoint: that western influence is a threat to Russian society. ANALYSIS OF THE BOOK: SETTING AND CHARACTERIZATION The major protagonist, Raskolnikov, is somewhat of a paradox. On the one hand, he is destitute, he is mumbling to himself and nearly out of his mind with hunger. He mutters about the thing about which he is thinking of doing, which we assume is the crime of theft. After he has visited the old woman and pawned the watch, he carefully remembers her getting the key to the money drawer and dwells on that. While Raskolnikov is destitute and even the environment around him is abject poverty; he is described as being tall and very good-looking. This seems to go against our image of what he must be.
