deals not only with the character of the American nation as a whole, but also with the nature of Americans as individuals - namely, what is an American. In Letters of an American Farmer (2004), which was published in the late eighteenth century, Crevecoeur noted several salient characteristics of American people of the time, which the majority of the population had in common. Many, for instance, were poor, and had come to America in the hope of finding better economic opportunities than had been available in their homelands. Once they arrived and settled, however, they did not necessarily perpetuate the traditional cultural ways of their original nations, but looked towards new forms of social structures and government: in addition, they tended to dissolve ethnic and cultural barriers through intermarriage. They were enthusiastic about new ideas, and about their commonality of purpose in the new country: consequently, Crevecoeur tended to emphasise what he saw as the underlying unity of the new country, as well as its unique characteristics in comparison to those of European countries. However, as Lauter (2004) points out, Crevecoeurs perspective that all nations were represented and that these were being transformed into a "new race of men" through their unity of purpose as Americans was not entirely accurate. As Lauter notes, Crevecoeur mentions only British, French, Dutch, German and Swedish people, which can hardly be described as "all" nations - in fact, it is only a small selection of the worlds population as a whole.
