This fact necessarily impacts drug-abuse counseling practice due to the fact that research shows that various ethnic groups respond differently from mainstream white clients to traditional approaches to substance abuse therapy. While ethnic minority clients demonstrate better responses than Whites to some interventions, they also experience worse outcomes than do Whites to other therapeutic approaches (Burlew, et al, 2011). This impacts drug abuse counseling practice in that practitioners have recognized the urgent need to include racial and ethnic minority participants in clinical trials so that these client populations can benefit from advances in substance abuse treatment. This need has been addressed by the Clinical Trials Network (CTN) of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which, along with other research institutions, has developed strategies that are designed to improve minority inclusion in clinical trials. By improving ethnic/racial minority recruitment in clinical trials, the counseling profession is addressing the need to provide effective substance abuse therapies for these groups. 2. According to demographic data that was garnered from the US Census and the FBI Crime Database, which was posted by an online site, Encino, California is primarily non-Hispanic White, as demographic designation accounts for 83 percent of the overall population ("Neighborhood," 2012). However, ethnic/racial minorities also comprise a significant percentage of the population, with the largest demographic designation being individuals of mixed race, as they comprise 6 percent of the population, numbering 1520 ("Neighborhood," 2012).
