responds with a speech that equates capitalism with greed and presents it as the engine behind the progress of corporate life run (Wall Street). With Enron and other tales of corporate greed run amuck, it is easy to sympathize with those who oppose corporate greed and see men such as Gekko as unscrupulous villains, but the question arises as to whether this is a fair judgement on capitalism in general. Commentator John Stossel points out that, according to the media, there are two worlds: the nonprofit world, where everything is "warm, caring and devoted to the public good"; and the for-profit world, where "capitalists cruelly exploit the weak" (Stossel 36). In the Hollywood movie, the individual most likely to be a thoroughly amoral, an oppressor without conscious, is not a member of a terrorist organization or an oppressive regime, but a businessman (Stossel 36). When Ralph Nadar talks about corporate greed, the generally public nods its agreement. Is this accurate? Stossel argues that within the framework of the global economy, flagrantly disreputable companies such as Enron are rare and the "market finds out and stops them" (Stossel 36). Simply arguing unequivocally against capitalistic greed does not present the full picture. To prove his point, Stossel asks his readers to consider who has helped the most people, Michael Milken or Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa spent her life helping the poor, while Milken was arrested for violating security laws. Nevertheless, Milkens tactics, his selfish pursuit of profit, aided a great many people. Cell phones dot the city landscape largely because "Milken financed Craig McCaw" (Stossel 36). Chrysler and Matell, and all of the people that they employ, were rescued from bankruptcy by Milken and his bonds (Stossel 36).
