As translator Corin Corley shows in his version of Lancelot of the Lake, the medieval Arthurian tales carefully prepare the audience for subsequent events by demonstrating why it would be logical -- according to medieval standards -- for Lancelot to be the best of knights, yet also the betrayer of his kings trust. At the very beginning of Lancelots career -- when he is not yet a full knight and is simply referred to in the saga as the "youth" -- he is presented with the challenge inherent in the condition of a wounded knight who has the weapons causing his injuries still in his body. Sir Yvain explains to Lancelot that no one has come forward to aid this knight because the wounded man insists that the knight that aids him by removing the weapons also accepts the certain conditions that he lays down. In this scene, the medieval belief in the efficacy of the knighting ceremony is quite evident. It is clear that both to the young Lancelot, as well as the other knights, that the ceremony is more than symbolic, but actually confers upon the recipient the grace of God. Prior to the ceremony after having heard the dire conditions laid down by the knight, the youth did not dare "utter another word, except to commend the wounded knight to God" and he also expressed the hope that "God wold make him a man of valor" (Corley 73). This hope is fulfilled for as soon as the young knight has received the accolade from the king and heard mass, he is ready to accept the wounded knights conditions.
