The literature reveals there is a limited knowledge regarding the incidence and prevalence of this condition, but studies in cohorts of patients from specialist services suggest that psychiatrists are
improving their ability to identify cases of conversion disorder (Allin et al, 2005, pp. 205-209). Trauma is one of the most prevalent
causes of conversion disorder. How an individual perceives the traumatic event has a significant impact upon the response; as such, people who believe the circumstances to be unusually threatening
will be much more prone to wide-ranging distress than someone whose perception is not so dire (Ford, 2005). Reaction to critical incidents, such as tragedies, deaths, serious injuries or
threatening situations, require the human being to respond in a way that intensifies the inherent manifestations of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Noted by a combination of both physical
