As such it was an approach to foreign policy that possessed many different levels of involvement around the world, and on the domestic front in the United States. The following paper examines the policy of containment in US history from the years following WWII onward. Containment in US History As mentioned, containment was implemented in order to protect against the threat of communism. That applied to the entire world as well as the domestic front in the United States. It was believed that communism would take over the world if the United States did not actively become involved and keep the Soviet Union, and its ideals, contained. As one author notes, in relationship to the implementation of containment and the threat, it was believed, in an ideal formed by Kennan, "That the Soviet Union was always expansionist--the Soviet Union, animated by a new fanatic faith," was determined "to impose its absolute authority on the rest of the world" (OMalley). This was also a threat within the United States, or it was believed to be a threat, and there was a great deal of effort aimed at keeping the United States society safe as well. Another element of the policy of containment was the Marshall Plan.
