There, they sang hymns, read passages of Scripture and partook in the sacrificial meal of the Last Supper (Ludy, 1926). They also congregated in cemeteries to celebrate the anniversaries of the deaths, often of those who were martyred, in the name of Christ (Ludy, 1926). Some believe that it was these cemetery celebrations that led to the construction of simple chapels in the cemeteries and at the entrances of the catacombs (Ludy, 1926). As Christianity began to spread, especially after the early part of the 4th century, a new type of construction was born, what is sometimes called "culted construction" (www.CaucasianHistory.ORG, 2002). It was a new type of architecture, that devoted itself, in some cases, to the design and construction of buildings that were reserved for a limited number of persons for the purpose of prayer (www.CaucasianHistory.ORG, 2002). In some cases, the architecture was very simple and severe externally and internally being designed for prayer and not for creature comforts (www.CaucasianHistory.ORG, 2002). Decoration and art was not included in these designs (www.CaucasianHistory.ORG, 2002). But, that was also the age of the Basilican type of church, modeled after the Roman Basilica, which was a large colonnaded building that was used to transact business and legal affairs during the Roman empire (Ludy, 1926). The exterior of these buildings was rather plain but the interior was very large and spacious and was arranged in a way to facilitate the multiple demands of the early Christian ideals both in structure and for ritual worship (Ludy, 1926).
