The contention can be presented that conquest typically occurs as a result of one groups desire to obtain the resources of another. That contention can be supported with a brief look at three separate civilizations on three separate continents. The first civilization that will be explored in our attempt to validate the contention presented above is the Roman conquest of Britannia. The beginning chapters of that conquest, of course, unfurled at the hand of Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar is considered one of the greatest military commanders of all time. In these pursuits he exhibited a consummate military genius, supreme strategy and judgment, and tremendous energy. An example of the strategy that was employed in Roman conquest can be found in the structure of the Roman army itself and how that structure changed over time, changes that are dutifully recorded by Tacitus and other primary authors. During the Roman Republic the Roman army was intentionally composed of land owners. The Roman philosophy behind this strategic maneuver revolved around the belief that landowners would defend their property and country more conscientiously than those who had no vested interest. The policy of using landowners in the army continued until Rome began to expand its borders. Soldiers were deployed overseas to protect the lands that had fallen to Roman conquest as well as to invade new lands.
