Discussion The first story, The verb to kill is overpowering the authors use of language, so thats what well look at, because it defines the narrator and helps us understand her actions. The story opens with an extraordinary paragraph; heres the first part: "He kills - he killed - he shall kill - he would kill - he has killed - he had killed - he will have killed - he would have killed - he is killing - he had been killing" (Valenzuela, 2007). She repeats this declension at various points in the story, and the effect is not to make the reader suspicious of the "he" in the story, but of the narrator herself. She tells us that she and her sister are afraid of this unnamed man, but it becomes clear that they are projecting their own fear onto him, not because of something hes done, but because of the cloudiness of their own minds. When she says "Father finally lent us his rifle, after we begged him for it to go rabbit hunting with. He told us that we are old enough to take the rifle alone now if we want to, just the two of us, but that we have to be very careful" (Valenzuela, 2007), we know immediately that the killing in the story is going to be done by the girls, not by the man whom they have built up in their diseased imaginations to be a monster. The fact that they are very different from the childlike picture they present is revealed in the incident with the seagull: they rescue the bird, care for it tenderly, take it home-then stew it and eat it (Valenzuela, 2007).
