and with the death/murder of his father. In this story there are numerous conflicts and this is perhaps why it is such a powerful and enduring story. One of the conflicts that is generally subtle, but incredibly important, is the conflict between Hamlet and his mother Queen Gertrude. The following paper examines this conflict. Conflict in Hamlet In the beginning of the play Hamlet returns home because his father is now dead. But, he also learns that his mother has quickly remarried. She is married to Claudius, who is essentially Hamlets uncle. This sets the conflict in motion for it makes Hamlet believe that his mother had no real love for his father that she could marry so quickly. He is incredibly distraught: "So excellent a king; that was, to this...so loving to my mother...she would hang on him....By what it fed on: and yet, within a month--...Frailty, thy name is woman!-" (Shakespeare I ii). He claims that she should have mourned longer, that she should not have married his uncle and that in so doing he ultimately feels he cannot rely on her for support, nor trust her as he believed her to be. AS one critic notes, "Hamlet believes that the reason for this is that she wants to be as close to the seat of power as possible and will do anything to keep her power as queen" and this sets him on a path of rage and confusion (The English Review 5). In truth, if she had not been already married, if he had come home and she had been there to support him he would not have immersed himself in the level of darkness and despair that he did.
