It is important to note there is no single theory of complexity, instead, "a number of different fields with intriguing points of resemblance, overlap or complementarity" (Rosenhead, n.d.) have emerged (Rosenhead, n.d.). Kaufman explains that the science and theory of complexity grew "out of earlier forays in systems theory, cybernetics, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory" (Keskinen, Aaltonen, and Kelly, 2003). Rosenhead (n.d.) explains that systems may perform in predictable and regular ways under certain conditions but under different conditions, the systems may exhibit behavior that is neither predictable nor regular. Those changes in the conditions may be so miniscule that we do not even notice them but they can lead to "diverging system reactions until eventually the evolution of behaviour is quite dissimilar" (Rosenhead, n.d.). Systems studied within complexity theory are dynamic in nature, which means that over a period of time, they are capable of changing (Rosenhead, n.d.). Some do so in a slow and regular manner, the changes can be predicted, but other systems do not have any sort of regularity in changing (Rosenhead, n.d.). These systems are unstable and they tend to "move further and further away from their starting conditions until/unless brought up short by some over-riding constraint" (Rosenhead, n.d.). Physical sciences have discussed the concepts of stable and unstable systems but there is also something between these two ends and that is chaos (Rosenhead, n.d.). Chaos or chaotic behavior in this setting means that while a system may have a number of regularities, the behaviors cannot be predicted (Rosenhead, n.d.). Rosenhead offers the example of the changing weather, which is a good example - just consider three major hurricanes sweeping through Central Florida in five weeks.
