At the beginning of the course, I conceptualized the word "community" in a rather vague way as referring to people who live in the same general area. I now understand the terms "community" and "population" in a much more specific manner. "Community" refers to a group of people who have at least one factor in common and interact with each other and this commonality usually includes a geographical location (Lundy and Janes, 2009). A "population" is a group of people who share a common factor and may, or may not, interact with each other (Lundy and Janes, 2009). For example, the faculty of a major university can be regarded as a community, while a population can refer to all sexually active teenagers or any other broad classification, such as nurses who work the night shift. Evaluation of change in personal perspectives of community/ public health From this course, I have developed a deeper appreciation for and understanding of the community/public health strategies that have resulted in major health benefits for society. Through the institution of environmental sanitation standards; the control of community infections; educational interventions; and the provision of nursing services for early diagnosis and preventive services, the progress made over the course of the last century has been truly astounding (Novick and Morrow, 2008).
