like many other areas in the nation, community problem solving is looked to for support and answers. The following paper examines community problem solving in Tucson, AZ as it involves law enforcement concerns on the higher education campuses in the city. Community Problem Solving While campuses across the nation have many problems relating to crime and law enforcement issues, the campus police of Tucson have a Police Commander who is dedicated to making a difference and ensuring that the campuses are safer for all. One of the perspectives in her plan is to engage in strengthening community support. This entails the police community of the campuses and the community of students and faculty alike. When asked about community police she replies that "One of things that I am a big proponent of is community policing. I think this is a perfect environment for community policing" (Candrian; Lopez, 2003). She arranged for their department to have teams for each particular campus, despite the fact that they are short handed. Thus far she has had the support of the administrators and other police officials for engaging in community action in this manner. And, when asked if she felt that community policing was about making law enforcement presence known the Police Commander replied that "Community policing is about partnerships and problem solving. We do that currently, but we want to do it in a well-organized fashion" (Candrian; Lopez, 2003). The Police Commander clearly seems to recognize that crime will happen, and she does not seem unduly alarmed at the present realities but clearly also wishes to change things through community problem solving. She is quite open to new ideas it seems, and is very intent on growing in relationship to strength and presence with the community policing and involvement. ...
