Communication takes other forms than only that of individuals of the same culture exchanging ideas or information specific to their common culture, of course. The study of performance methods, techniques and execution is an integral part of the study of communication, even that which individuals perceive as being interpersonal exchanges of information that should have little if any effect on the course of the universe outside of the lives of the individuals directly involved. "Both performance studies and cultural studies seek, not only to describe, explain and predict social phenomenon, but also to reform or change the society in which we live." The purpose here is to discuss this statement. Tradition "Because I said so" has been a favorite parental response in the past; the organizational equivalent can be seen in "Because weve always done it that way." Performance studies take us to the point of being able to describe and explain Lady MacBeths reaction to the blood she perceives as being on her hands. She loses what has appeared to be a firm grasp on reality to begin furiously washing her hands while delivering her "Out, damned spot!" line. There are some things in this life that just are, that result from the intersection of natural law, cultural context, interpersonal communication and personal conviction. A person with a conscience can be expected to experience guilt over murder; the children of feuding families can be expected to continue the conflict themselves.
