Warner are first and second in size. Comcast currently has approximately 8.2 million subscribers (Hoovers, 2000). The three largest companies together have approximately 36 million customers out of a total of 67 million cable customers in the United States. That means that Comcast has about 12 percent of the market (Hall, 1999, p. 4). The company is presently in the process of upgrading its systems to fiber-optics, however, they are still offering broadband services that include digital cable and high-speed modem Internet access (Hoovers, 2000). Comcast owns part of QVC, E! Entertainment Television, Comcast-Spectator, Comcast SportsNet and Excite Internet search engine. Comcast-Spectator owns the 76ers basketball team and the Philadelphias Flyers hockey team (Hoovers, 2000; Comcast, 2000). Comcast Corporation is primarily involved in the development, management and operation broadband cable networks and in the provision of electronic commerce and programming content (Comcast, 2000, p. htm).
