Introduction Although some men can be affected as well, breast cancer impacts primarily women. There are psychological as well as physiological considerations in the treatment of this disease. Early diagnosis is critical if this disease is to be most effectively treated. Mammography remains the tool of choice in detecting the condition and surgical removal is most often paired with aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy followed up by a rigid pharmacological regime. Convincing women to take that first critical step in diagnosis, however, remains an obstacle. Some groups are more difficult to convince than others about the importance of having annual mammographies. Women of lower socioeconomic class (particularly African American women) are less likely to pursue screening than are other women. This is due to a number of reasons ranging from the lack of adequate healthcare insurance, to misguided beliefs about their susceptibility to cancer and/or the value of screening, to a reluctance to interact with health care professionals and systems because of previous negative experiences. The literature emphasizes that all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status, greatly benefit from annual screening. Diagnosis if the first step in treatment.
