works. In his short novel, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, first published in 1886, Tolstoy again criticized the Russian class structure as it affected the novels main character. Ivan Ilyich was a typical member of the Russian bourgeois class that was more interested in money and things than it was in people. Ivan lived his life in order to appeal to the members who lived within his class structure, and blinded from the truth it was his class structure that ruined his morals, made him judge others unfairly, and prevented him to enjoy any happiness in his brief life. As the title suggests, the novella begins with the death of his main character, whose life is presented through the observations of the people closest to him. But no one could ever become too close to Ivan Ilyich because the members of the bourgeois (middle class) were more interested in securing the highest social position they were allowed to achieve along with the most impressive items that would reflect their class status. At a gathering following Ivans death, the people he believed loved him the most were more concerned about their own futures than they were about the passing of their husband and friend. Tolstoy wrote of Ivan and his co-workers, "He had been ill for some weeks with an illness said to be incurable. His post had been kept open for him, but there had been conjectures that in case of his death Alexeev might receive his appointment, and that either Vinnikov or Shtabel would succeed Alexeev. So on receiving the news of Ivan Ilyichs death the first thought of each of the gentlemen in that private room was of the changes and promotions it might occasion among themselves or their acquaintances" ...
