This is a 5 page paper discussing Chinese culture and social change. China is well known for its centuries of traditional values, customs and beliefs. These beliefs are deeply linked with the language, religions and collective values which have always been the center of traditional festivals, customs and everyday life of man as a collective in harmony with nature. Despite the strong Chinese cultural traditions, the last century has seen a great deal of social change in China. Most recently, increased involvement in the global economic market has led to a high level of prosperity in China which is unfortunately not shared by all. Global influences have also led to the increased interest in science and technology; factors which have also affected social change and the cultural values of the population.

which is unfortunately not shared by all. Global influences have also led to the increased interest in science and technology; factors which have also affected social change and the cultural
values of the population. China, with a population of nearly 1.3 billion people, has a great many aspects of culture such as languages, beliefs, values and custom which are unique
in their blend of traditions, religion and elements of the modern world. Historically, China for centuries led civilization in terms of the arts and sciences. In the 19th and 20th
centuries however, "China was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats and foreign occupation" (CIA, 2003). In the mid 20th century, the Communist government led by Mao Zedong took
over the country and while the Communists ensured China a certain level of security it also imposed a great deal of control over its people. In 1978, leader Deng Xiaoping
introduced many economic reforms which took into account global markets and the output of China increased nearly four times. Overall however "political controls remain tight while economic controls continue to
be relaxed" and the introduction of the global community has had its effect on culture within China (CIA, 2003). Currently, China is over 90% Han Chinese while the rest of
the population consists of Zhuang, Hui, Yi and many others. The primary religions in China are Daoist and Buddhist with a small percentage of Muslim and Christian. The major languages
