It is difficult to pry little Timmy away from the latest video game, and he is rather quiet while playing by himself. And televisions which are connected to cable are no longer a luxury. Rather, like the Monkees Pleasant Valley Sunday song, which was released in the sixties, there is a TV in every room. Unlike the song, things are not serene. Rather, violent television and video games merely serve to raise blood pressure, encourage the consumption of junk food, and leave little precious time for school work and playing outdoors. It leaves little time for reading. Why would anyone want to read anyway if they can get a book on tape, or simply watch the movie version? For the most part, any good childrens book gets turned into a television series or a film. But while the couch potato phenomenon might create little monsters, as evidenced by a rash of school shootings and the increase of violence in children and teenagers, it does something else. It steals time from youngsters, time which might have been used to engage in creative activities. Creativity is not encouraged. Crafts, for example, are popular among young girls, but there is little creativity involved in following sample patterns and specific information. Creativity is, rather, the use of ones mind to make something out of nothing. That is, creativity is involved when one writes stories or poems, plays with dolls, builds a house out of little sticks or builds a sand castle on the beach.
