It is difficult to select only four of the eleven characteristics of language as "most important" when all of them distinctly contribute. However, it seems that of the eleven, the four can be labeled as being most important can be said to be the characteristics of language as being a system of systems, meaningful, conventional and creative. A systematic approach avoids the need for a lengthy session in definition of terms preceding each instance of communication, however brief. It assumes that the speaker will follow a logical, linear path in conveying a point. An example from class is that contained on Slide 7 describing a lesson in driving a car with a manual transmission. Meaning includes both referential and grammatical meaning (Slide 19), providing a framework in which anyone who knows the language being used is clear on the speakers intent. An example is "boat." The word itself provides no information on whether the subject of discussion is a canoe or an aircraft carrier, but the hearer can be certain that it is a vessel that floats on water. Convention provides a similar service in that it ensures that all involved share a common understanding of the terms being used. It also provides a means of creating subsets of language that may not be familiar to all who speak the foundation language. Slide 27 provides an example in the use of "bad," which in reality means "very good" to those populating the subset in which this is true.
