The most successful art comes from examining the human flaws to which everyone whether rich or poor, intelligent or illiterate can relate. In some of the most successful world dramas - Sophocles Oedipus Rex (entitled in some text versions as Oedipus the King), William Shakespeares The Tragedy of Othello, Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman, and Margaret Edsons Wit - deeply human protagonists expose their flaws in various ways, refusing to heed the warning signs that they are steering themselves towards tragedy of their own making. The flaws of pride and insecurity oftentimes go hand in hand because, as Oedipus, Othello, Willy Loman, and Vivian Bearing demonstrate, it is the proud person that hides behind a strong persona in order to hide the perceived weaknesses that fuel their various insecurities. Oedipus took enormous pride in being the King of Thebes. He wanted his people to love and respect him as a kind of fatherly figure who would stop at nothing to protect his subjects from harm. When a deadly plague swept through Thebes, leaving a trail of dead bodies in its past, the King confidently reassured his ailing people, "My search has found one way to treat our disease - and I have acted already" (Sophocles 4). He becomes convinced that the gods are angrily punishing Thebes for the mysterious death of Oedipuss predecessor, King Laius (and husband of Oedipuss wife, Jocasta), and he believes that if he can discover the identity of the murderer, he will have single-handedly saved his people from enduring any more misery.
