A 3 page paper reviewing changes in public education spending in the US between 1919 and 2001. Per-student spending in adjusted dollars (to 2001) has increased nearly 16 times over the 1919-20 amount and by a third in the modern era of technology; it would seem that we could expect more impressive results in outcome than we currently enjoy. Many other factors enter into spending today, however, including educating a greater percentage of America's school-age children than in the past and providing bilingual and special education to children who were excluded from public education in decades past. Of interest here are the NCES records of educational funding and how it has changed over the years. Public Education Though the federal government is inextricably involved in public education in the United States, the concept and the fact traditionally has been under the control of individual states (Public education, 2005). "The Land Ordinance of 1785 established a mechanism for funding public education in the United States. Until at least the 1840s, however, most schools continued to be privately owned and operated" (Public education, 2005). NCES Table 156 illustrates the differences in funding that have occurred over decades, beginning with the 1919-20 school year. Table 1 illustrates changes in government funding sources during the 20th century as well as changes in total educational spending per student. Table 1.
