by looking only at the relationship between child and school: there are numerous other interrelated factors which influence the childs personality development and behavior, and which will therefore have an impact on how they act in school. These factors might include the childs relationship with their parents, their socio-cultural environment, their level of self-esteem (especially in relation to peer groups), gender issues, physical or mental disability, and so on. Before looking at specific forms of disruptive behavior which we might encounter in the classroom, and the ways in which counselors might address these, we need to look at some of these factors and the impact which they have on the adolescents perception of themselves and the outside world. Obviously, no child exists in a social vacuum, and the relationship which the individual has with parents, family, local community and society as a whole will have a significant effect on their behavioral patterns: sometimes, these patterns are established long before adolescence, and may even continue into adulthood. If we look, for instance, at Bowlbys attachment theory, which defines the psychological connection between human beings that begins with the bond between mother and child. we see that this early connection is seen as having lasting significance, since it impacts not only on childs subsequent emotional and psychological development but also on the way in which he or she will form relationships with others. Attachment behavior is not something which is solely confined to the relationship between parent and child, but affects behavior across the lifespan.
