This 11 page report discusses the region and nation-states referred to as Central Asia. The five republics or nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or the “Kyrgyz Republic,” Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan have unique cultural and ethnic heritages and are distinctly different from what is often lumped together as being simply “Russian.” There are three major challenges to these countries: national identity, economic viability, and relations with Russia and the nine million Russians living in the region. Each of the republics declared its independence in 1991.

Soviet Union. Ranging from hypotheses embracing the triumph of the individual human spirit to the economic mismanagement of the Soviet political structure, a vast array of possibilities has been
proffered. Those same experts have also had a great deal to say about the impact of the collapse on Eastern Europe, the world economy, Soviet states, and more but
issues related to Central Asia are often glossed over or neglected in the discussions. Yet the dissolution of the Soviet Union had a major impact on, literally, millions of
people as the Central Asian republics "re-invent" themselves. The Soviet Union was a vast "country," therefore the motivations, fears and interests of its
diverse people were also enormously complex. The Kremlin was most certainly not the sole locus of influence, but the political scene had been dominated by the interplay of many forces
in Soviet society with the actions of a particular leader. No single force or occurrence can be identified as the single incident, person, or movement that ultimately led to
the dissolution of the USSR. Instead, the break up of the Soviet Union was more of an event waiting to happen. As the world held its collective breath,
the Soviet political, governmental, and cultural totalitarianism began to dissolve. The rapidly shifting balances of the 1990s, the dissolution of a formerly authoritarian directorship, and new developments stemming from the
acceleration of economic globalization have forced each Central Asian state to reevaluate and reshape virtually all aspects of its governmental, social, and political strategies. Central Asia "Central Asia" is the
