Giltman 4/2010 Please Chandra Mayors first novel written in 2004, Cherry, recounts the tale of an anonymous young woman whose relationship goes sour and the decisions she makes are put into question. Set in the inner city of Winnipeg, Canada, the novel opens with this woman meeting a charismatic skinhead named Tom. They move in together, where she quickly discovers his drug and alcohol addiction and subsequently becomes a victim of his random temper tantrums. There are signs throughout the novel that this girl is relatively smart, yet her social inclination to fit in among some group prevails and she refuses to leave him. She eventually becomes pregnant with his child and then starts questioning her relationship with Tom. She decides to keep the baby even though she knows she does not have the financial means or the proper home to raise a child in the world she lives. Throughout the novel, Cherry successfully depicts the horrors of living in the inner city and the obstacles people of her stature have to overcome to survive. Essentially, she gives all the women in this world a voice where they can also reveal the trials and tribulations people in poverty-stricken battle each and every day. In fact, through words alone, Mayor vividly illustrates the menacing acts of violence through the book.
