Koi require. Many may argue that they do just fine under the same conditions as gold fish in a pond, while others argue a Koi has special requirements that need
more attention. The following paper examines what care and maintenance of a Koi pond entails. The paper does not discuss truly discuss the construction or design needs of a Koi
pond, but rather what this sort of pond needs after construction. Care and Maintenance of a Koi Pond Once a pond is constructed it is important to understand
that to have a "you also need a biological filter, a source of aeration, a circulation pump and adequate space" (Davis, 2006). The filtration system that is in place will
purify the water. It cleans out water waste, toxins and bacteria (Davis, 2006). Another author notes that koi are powerful sewage machines, especially in comparison to simple goldfish. "[I]n a
typical koi pond the amount of waste produced by more and larger fish means that the water is continuously being polluted to higher levels, which in turn will have a
serious affect on fish health" (Sources and types of water pollution, 2006). As such a filtration system is essential to the health and success of a koi pond. This is
indicated by another author who states that lack of knowledge about filtration systems, and the poor maintenance of filtration systems are generally the reasons why koi develop health problems (The
Pond Doc [1]). They should be cleaned and replaced when needed. A source of aeration can be as simple as a waterfall
