subtle yet powerful stories of love, nature, and human desire. While different, they have many similarities as well. The following paper compares and contrasts the two stories in relationship to
the theme of wasted/lost love and in relationship to the imagery offered. Canaries and Snow Country In the Snow Country there
is a very intense level of imagery that is very reliant upon nature. In the beginning, for example, the voice of Yoko is described as follows: "It was such a
beautiful voice that it struck one as sad. In all is high resonance it seemed to come echoing back across the snowy night" (Kawabata [1] 5). Such an image
offers the reader a connection between nature and this womans voice, making it a beautiful and natural thing that is clearly related to Shimamura, the man who will be fascinated
with her. Canaries does not have quite the same level of imagery as it involves nature, but the imagery of nature is still there, especially when one understands that
the subject of the story is canaries that are natural, yet symbolic of love as well. The man, the author of the letter, states how "the birds wings appear to
have suddenly grown weak" which symbolizes also the weakness in the man as well through the death of his wife and the memory of his lost love (Kawabata [2]).
Canaries also offers the reader an understanding of the theme of lost or wasted love as the man illustrates how were it not for his wife, apparently a good and
loving woman, he could not have loved the woman to whom he is writing. This is a sad, chaotic, but also meaning illustration of a wasted love as the man
