Looking at Europe where there is a high level of competition it may be argued that customer relationship management (CRM) is an essential part of a business strategy needed on order to ensure that sales are made. Looking at the way customer relationship management takes place in the luxury fashion industry it is possible to assess the way that it is being used, how it may be used and the potential for the use of CRM in the near future. This is a market where there are many competitors. At the high end of the luxury fashion market in Europe there are the Haute Couture suppliers. To examine the way that they compete and how customers are treated in this market it is essential that their position and exclusivity is fully understood. The term haute couture is associated with high-fashion, but the term has a more specific meaning than this generalised or generic application. The term haute couture in France is a legal time, known as a protected appellation. In order to be able to use the label fashion house has to be able to satisfy certain criteria laid down by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Each year a list is drawn up by the commission which is domiciled of the ministry of industry, only those companies which are on the list can refer to themselves as haute couture (Meij and Meij, 2000; (De Marly, 1994).
