Needless to say, these "rubbers" (which were called "condoms" later on), were a crude method to prevent pregnancy from occurring. The theory was that the heavy rubber material would block any of the fluid from moving between the penis and vagina. While the theory was good, in reality, the rubbers were bulky and uncomfortable. This is something to think about -- rubber material on any part of the skin is bound to be bulky and uncomfortable. So they werent in wide use because they were hard to get on and undependable. But now, in the 21st century, condoms are no longer made from rubber (though they still carry the "rubber" nickname). Theyre made from latex (and are called "natural latex rubber condoms") manufactured by mixing chemicals with natural liquid latex (Gilmore, (b), 2004). The latex rubber condom is more reliable than the pure rubber condom was, mainly due to quality management, partly due to packaging and partly due to better formulations (Gilmore, (b), 2004). There are disadvantages with latex, however, one is that too much exposure to oxygen can mean a condom is useless (Gilmore, (b), 2004). One of the ways in which this has been prevented is through vulcanization of the material, a chemical curing process (Gilmore, (b), 2004). At the molecular level, vulcanization increases the strength and resilience of the rubber by forming sulfer crosslinks between strands of the latex (Gilmore, (b), 2004). Vulcanized rubber means the condom returns to its shape quicker after being stretched -- and is also a little safer for the condom (Gilmore, (b), 2004). Though condoms are among the tools ...
