As of 1999, more than 12 million Americans were considered illicit drug abusers (Anonymous (b), 1999). Furthermore, parents who abuse substances can be found to inflict four categories of abuse on their children; emotional, physical, neglect and sexual (Anonymous (b), 1999). Furthermore, parental responsibilities tend to be impacted by an addition, meaning children face physical as well as psychological abuse (Anonymous (b), 1999). Children are, at times, left alone while parents feed their addiction. In addition, older children are forced to act as parents for younger siblings, subjecting them all to serious emotional and psychological stress (Anonymous (b), 1999). Finally, rage, experienced by those addicted to illicit drugs or alcohol, leads to child abuse (Anonymous (b), 1999). In this paper, well attempt to examine the literature available about the link between substance abuse and child abuse. Once the link has been established, well discuss the implications of the research for continued social work. Importance of the Research When it comes to the child welfare system, parental substance abuse and child abuse have been major issues - and very much linked with one another (Besinger et al, 1999). Surprisingly however, although the link between the two was established more than 30 years ago, not much hard research has been performed on the link between the two situations (Besinger et al, 1999).
