CFM engines in service, so many that an aircraft using them takes off every "three seconds, every single day" (CFM56 Fleet Statistics, 2005). Collectively, the CFM56 family of engines has "logged more than 300 million flying hours and nearly 150 billion miles" (CFM56 Fleet Statistics, 2005). All CFM engines carry a turbofan design for reliability and cost effectiveness. The name of the company is not an acronym. Rather, it is a combination of the products of the joint venture companys parents, GEs CF6 and the French Snecmas M56. CFM56-2 Turbofan Engine The CFM56-2 was the first of the CFM engines, based on the GE military F101, it entered service in 1982. It provides 22,000 - 24,000 pounds of thrust and was certified at 24,000 pounds by both the FAA and DGAC. It is a high performance engine that provides fuel efficiency and exceeds noise and emission requirements for new aircraft. It is "the first high bypass ratio engine to meet stringent FAR 33-6 ingestion rules" (CFM56-2 Turbofan Engine, n.d.). The CFM56-2 is most commonly used by the US Air Force, which is CFMs largest single customer. As such, it uses more than 450 CFM56-2 engines. CFM56-3 Turbofan Engine CFM International says that a "growing number of CFM56-3 engines reach more than 25,000 hours before their first shop visit removal" (CFM56-3 Turbofan Engine, n.d.).
