Having a source as important as Arkady Shevchenko could prove to be quite advantageous to the United States as they were operating chiefly on rumors and suppositions as to the actual inner workings of the Soviet government. When Shevchenko became available as an informant, it was an important coup for the United States. Before this time nobody as high-ranking as himself had been a reliable source for the realities behind the Soviets and the KGB. It was on April 6, 1978, that soviet officials arrived at their offices in the United Nations Secretariat building in New York City only to find something terribly wrong. The inner office had been closed off and the lock on the door had been changed. A notice on the door read that United Nations Security Forces had sealed the office. Demanding to know what had happened to their countryman, Arkady Shevchenko, they were told it was he who had requested the offices be sealed the night before. It was not until five days later that the world learned that Arkady Shevchenko had defected to the United States. In 1957, Arkady Shevchenko, a Communist youth, joined the Foreign Ministry and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a top advisor to the Soviet Foreign Ministry and the Politburo. He was an Under Secretary General of the United Nations, and as such became the highest-ranking Soviet official to ever go over to the West.
