(DSM-IV-TR) are: 1. Preoccupation with imagined defect in appearance. If the person actually has a slight physical anomaly, the person blows it out of proportion to something that is excessive. 2. The preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of daily functioning. 3. The preoccupation cannot be better explained by another mental disorder, such as the dissatisfaction of body associated with anorexia nervosa (Behavenet, 2011). The Mayo Clinic reports that the etiology of Body Dysmorphic Disorder is not known. There could be one or many causes. Brain chemical differences may lead one person to have this condition and another to not have it. There may be differences in the structure of the brain. Genes may play a strong role. The environment may also play a strong role because it is within ones society and culture that a person has positive or negative negative experiences that affect their self-image (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). It is not hard to speculate on why so many girls do not feel good about their bodies. Models are so thin they are barely skin and bones. Actresses have also dropped pounds to be skinny because it could mean a job. A great deal has been written about this because it is having a devastating effect on girls and women who try to fit the image. It is societys pressure on females who cannot possibly fit the image of the desirable woman. When Body Dysmorphic Disorder is about weight, it will lead to eating disorders, which are another set of mental conditions.
