Therefore, in order to fully understand the problem it will be analyzed according to various prevalent social theories. College Binge Drinking - The Problem "The number of college students who participate in "binge drinking" -- or drinking for the purpose of getting drunk -- remains at 44 percent of all students despite increased efforts by colleges to curb the trend" (College Binge Drinking, 2002). There is also a significant amount of tragedy associated with this problem (College Binge Drinking, 2002). Binge drinking claims approximately 1,400 student lives per year (College Binge Drinking, 2002). Furthermore, there are about 500,000 injuries and 70,000 cases of sexual assault associated with binge drinking on campuses (College Binge Drinking, 2002). Study after study shows that apparent attempts to curb this problem have been conducted in vain, and in fact little has changed with this social problem with the exception of its getting worse (College Binge Drinking, 2002). It appears that campaigns targeted even specifically at college students continue to befall deaf ears (College Binge Drinking, 2002). This social problem indeed is serious when one considers the enormous impact it has on so many different people, both directly connected to the college students and those indirectly effected.
