"Beyond the Convenant Chain, The Iroquois and Their
Neighbors in Indian North America 1600-1800" is a thorough overview of the Iroquois people during two hundred of what many would contend were the most critical years of their existence.
This history was staged during a time when the Iroquois were desperately trying to deal with a new force in their lives. That force was the European peoples
that had invaded their lands and the lands of their neighbors. Editors Daniel Richter and James H. Merrell do an excellent
job of compiling a diversity of sources that describe the Iroquois and their phenomenal strengths as a people. The Iroquois are described both independently and as they existed within
the covenant chain, a confederation they formed with the Southern New England Algonquians. They are also described in their interaction with other Native American groups. Some of these interactions
were positive but others were negative. In the chapter titled "Ordeals of the Longhouse: The Five Nations in Early
American History" Richter contends that the "social crises provoked by the European invasion" resulted in the Iroquois:
"devising novel solutions within a framework of familiar cultural patterns" (Richter and Merrell, 1987, 11).
In other words, the Iroquois were able to adapt when adaptation was demanded but at the same time they managed to preserve the critical elements of their culture.
