life for the monks of the sixth century and has been applied to subsequent monastic life as well as having become a guide for Western Christianity within the Orthodoxy and the Catholic Church as well as in the Anglican and Protestant churches. This Rule reflects both the religious and social values of western Europe at the time it was drafted. It is a reflection of Benedicts attempt to solve the problems that typically result in a community when there is no order. It was also intended to serve as a guideline for spiritual growth as it relates to the daily work that is required for communities to continue to exist and thrive. The Benedictine motton was "ora et labora", a motto that translates into "pray and work". The Benedictine rule provides the basis for self government for autonomous monastic communities. It encourages close relationships among the members of the communities and an immersion in prayer and contemplation of life. While the Benedict de Nursia chose to live the life of a hermit in a cabe in Subiaco, his rule quickly spread around Asia and Africa. Those monks that fell under the auspices of the rule included included Cenobites, Anachorites, Sarabaites, and Gyrovagues. The Cenobites were those that actually lived in a monastery and that were governed by the rules of that monastery. The Anachorites were those like Benedict himself that chose to live the live of a hermit once they had completed their training in an organized monastery. The Sarabaites lived in small groups of two and three or sometimes even alone. They had not benefited from the experience of living in a group community and learned to govern themselves. ...
