in a modern world. In portraying their problems and dreams, Yoshimoto creates stories that connect with young people everywhere. Yoshimotos favorite fictional form is the short novella. Her narratives
focus on primarily on character development, slowing revealing to the reader the nuances of personality that make up her complex fictional persona, rather like exploring an onion, layer by layer.
This is a pattern that Yoshimoto established from the beginning of her career with her story Kitchen, which features a young woman, Mikage Sakurai. This young woman has the slightly
odd characteristic of being innately drawn to kitchens, all types of kitchens, from the pristinely clean to the filthy. She is most at home in that particular room of
any house, "No matter where it is, no matter what kind, if its a kitchen...its fine with me" (3). As this indicates, Yoshimoto typically snags the readers interest in her
heroines through some interesting quirk of character. For example, in her novel Goodbye Tsugumi, the personality of Maria Shirakawa starts to take form from the first pages, as Maria
narrates her story with forthright honesty. She explains that--while she is named after the Virgin Mary--she is far from saint-like. But while Maria admits that she gets angry, just like
everybody else, she makes the observation that she gives up her anger quickly, which is a trait she attributes to growing up with her cousin Tsugumi. Maria tells herself,
