This was also in todays before businesses realized the importance of a motivated, well-trained workforce to maintain competitive advantage. Todays business environment is much different. The use of technology, coupled with an extraordinarily competitive global marketplace, has meant that businesses are regarding employees in a different light. For many companies, employees are no longer mere cogs in the machinery of big business, but rather, an important strategy toward a business success. As a result, human resources these days are more of a capital investment rather than a disposable item. Not only has corporate Americas view of employees changed, but the view of human resources managers have changed as well. Human resources managers are no longer relegated to the tasks of hiring, firing and filing mountains of paperwork. Rather, these managers are responsible for staffing of workforce that can help a company maintained a competitive advantage. In order to successfully staff a company, human resources managers today rely on four major areas. These areas are human resources planning; recruitment and selection; training and development and performance management.
