the late 19th century. Along with this, we can see growing cynicism toward so-called "traditional" values. As the world changes, it seems, there is less and less a need for
traditional values, as they seem somewhat worn out (and can at times be their own oppression). These days, there seems to be
a growing emphasis on this as a problem -- that the lack of traditional/family values has led to the darkness of bad morality, terrorism and death that seems to be
stalking everyone during the 21t century. But as well see, the mourning of traditional and family values is not exactly new to our time -- throughout the past century, this
has also been an issue as well. A cynicism entered society more than a century ago, and has pretty much been around, on and off, for the past 100 years.
Dramatists who were living during the 20th century used the theme of death of tradition and the frequency of oppression as partly
to blame as a basis for their plays, poems and stories. Two such dramatists, Federico Garcia Lorca and Bertold Brecht, brought such dichotomies to a fine art form, both through
their prose (or in Lorcas case, his poetry) and their plays. In this paper, well examine two works: Lorcas "La Casa de Bernarda Alba" (The House of Bernarda Alba)
and Brechts "Mother Courage." Despite the differing nationalities of the two authors, its striking to note the similarites of the works. For one thing, both take place in the shadow
