Sometimes they must be strong and not go to parties where they will be tempted to do illicit drugs or drink alcohol. Athletes generally try to keep themselves in tiptop shape so that they can perform well. Some athletes decide to use illegal drugs to enhance performance and some just succumb to the medicine cabinet to treat a bad cold. Either way, performance may be affected. In choosing athletes for a team sport for example, it is good to know how they cope and who would be most likely to use drugs. In examining the twenty-first century athlete, many aspects of sports as well as a psychological outlook should be examined. In respect to the effects of drugs on athletic performance, much depends on the type of drug or drug class used. Some drugs will enhance performance while others will deteriorate performance. Performance-enhancing drugs have been used by athletes in the Olympics for decades (Bamberger & Yaeger, 1997). That is because athletes will do almost anything to gain a competitive edge (1997). Dutch physician Michel Karsten claims to have prescribed anabolic steroids to many world-class athletes from swimming, track and field and even for the non-Olympic sport of powerlifting over a 25 year span (1997).
