There was a time that one could chose not be educated and still do okay in life if they were willing to work hard and use common sense., however todays standard of living almost dictates a solid education regardless of the field one plans to enter. Throughout America students attend schools of various shapes sizes and merit. The constitution of the United States of America guarantees each and every person here the right to a free and appropriate education. We seem to have all the tools in place with which to give students the foundation they need to go forth into the adult world and succeed, however we still have thousands of students each year who drop out nationwide. There are various causes of this happening, that can include home environment, undiagnosed learning disability, drug or alcohol problems and others. Regardless of the cause the end result will be the same in most cases, underemployment and underachievement for their entire adult lives. One of the ways to prevent dropping out of school is to identify and work with students who are considered at risk. These at risk students have certain patterns, lifestyles or preset problems that we have seen often enough to know places them at a higher risk for giving up and dropping out than the average student. These at risk students may well be the students who will go on to cure AIDS or cancer, or reinvent the wheel if given the right encouragement and opportunity to succeed educationally. ...
