When someone has difficulty breathing, it often means something is awry. They may have a condition known as asthma, or another disease, or they may simply be under duress and are hyperventilating. A physician can tell by measuring the oxygen level in the blood, as to whether or not the breathing difficulty is having a detrimental effect on the body or not. Before delving into asthma, its causes and treatment, the respiratory system will be detailed. The basic function of the respiratory system is to rid the body of carbon dioxide waste and to provide oxygen (Paul & Fafoglia, 1988). Oxygen composes 21% of the air everyone breathes and the remainder is made up of nitrogen and other gases which actually contains less than .03% carbon dioxide (1988). In order to effect this operation, air is drawn into the body through the nose which contains a thin membrane that secretes mucus (1988). Air travels from the pharynx to the larynx, also lined with mucous membranes and made up of cartilage and cords (1988). The pharynx holds the food and air passages that meet and cross in that location ("air passages," 1998). The larynx lies in front of the lower portion of the pharynx and is the organ where the voice is actually produced (1998). After going through the pharynx and larynx, the air enters the trachea and finally the lungs themselves; the carina divides the left and right bronchiole tubes, which compose both the upper and lower respiratory tracts (Paul et al., 1988).
