A 20 page analysis of the Asian crisis as it affected and continues to affect ASEAN financial policy. The basic facts behind the 1996 crisis are briefly reviewed, and proposed 1998 UN/IMF/EU policy changes are analyzed. The analysis is based on resistance to “the Washington consensus” by Japan; benefits realized by Korea, Indonesia and Thailand; and China’s involvement in the region, particularly in relationship to the proposed new policies.
