Bibliography lists 4 sources. SA143art.rtf Art history is important not only as to how it relates to art, but also as to how it represents society. From different societies come different types of art and in the ancient world, art was more than mere decoration. To people of today, they are artifacts which describe a very different world than what most are used to. In looking at gods and goddesses, some have speculated that there might have been a tendency to celebrate the woman. Indeed, that is true. However, it is not as if there was matriarchy in the early cultures. There was no age of matriarchy which might be equated with what has come to be known as the latter patriarchy ("Pharaohs," 1989). There are of course many women who were put on pedestals and worshipped in ancient societies. Queen Sammurammat of Assyria, for example, ruled her nation for 42 years and led military campaigns as well; she called herself the Goddess (1989). In ancient Egypt it seemed as if dynastic power had passed through females even when the Pharaoh had been a male (1989). In the end, Great Goddess had been dethroned by male gods (1989). While it seems as if in the end males became the dominant force, it is interesting to look at ancient civilizations and see that females were almost sacrosanct.
