commercial artists today. With that in mind the following paper examines Jusepe de Riberas "Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew" from the Baroque period, Giovanni Bellinis "St Francis in Ecstasy" from Early
Renaissance, and Albrecht Durers "Four Apostles" from the Classical Renaissance. Giovanni Bellini "St Francis in Ecstasy": Early Renaissance Giovanni Bellini was a figure who was quite popular as
a teacher of painting. He was also "chief painter to the State" indicating that he essentially was a man, like many, who painted what the State required or desired (the
Archive, 2006). One such painting is "St. Francis in Ecstasy." "Giovanni Bellini the intense investigation and recording of nature associated with the early Renaissance. His early painting of St.
Francis in Ecstasy, painted in the 1470s, illustrates his command of an almost Flemish realism" (Stokstad, 2004; Chapter 17). The Early Renaissance was a time of great change, and a
heavy reliance on all things religious. The State, part of religion and the Church, clearly influenced and directed the art of this time period, and the art of Bellini, who
clearly painted religious ideals of the time. It was also a time of romantic ideals as well, and the wondrous images and colors, and almost soft fogginess to Bellinis painting
