A 6 page overview of the influence of the French Revolution of the art of the time. Several of Jacques-Louis David’s paintings (including “The Tennis Court Oath”, “The Oath of Horatii”, and “Napoleon at the Pass at St. Bernard” are analyzed in terms of their depiction of historical circumstances. The conclusion is reached that David considered commoners heroes alongside famous generals like Napoleon. His art was not always a true reflection of historical circumstance, however, but rather a reflection of his ideologies and beliefs. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

is not only an ever-evolving discipline, it is also one of the most integral components of human expression. From the most primitive aspects of our history we have created and with our creations we have made impressions on others. Indeed, many of these impressions have survived the ravages of time to make impressions even on contemporary society. We must admit, however, that the role of art and the precise type of impact it may have has changed over time. It is indeed a medium of many contrasts. Never-the-less, art is about perception. Whichever format it takes, that which touches and moves its audience it indeed true art. At the same time, however, the perception of the artists themselves is of paramount importance in the production of art. Artist are impacted by a number of factors, not the least of which is the political environment in which they live. This contention can be no better demonstrated than through an analysis of one of the most radically changing periods of all time, the period bracketing the turn of the nineteenth century. The political changes which occurred between 1774 and 1820 are some of the most radical of all times. These changes are particularly interesting in regard to the manner in which they changed the artistic depiction of heroes. As artists perception of what constituted heroism changed, so too did their artistic renditions of these heroes. The purpose of this paper is to review the manner in which the paintings of Jacques-Louis David reflected the turmoil which was unfolding during the period leading up to, during, and immediately after the French Revolution..
