the drug, such as marijuana being a gateway drug to more dangerous substances, are mythical and unsupported. American marijuana users point to the less restrictive legal atmosphere in Europe regarding
marijuana use and argue that this has not increased consumption. British freelance writer I. Marwood sings the praises of marijuana, arguing that marijuana-users are calmer and less obnoxious than those
who drink alcohol. It all sounds very convincing. However, when each one of these arguments is examined, the case for marijuana legalization falls apart, as these perceptions simply do not
stand up to the facts. There are many people, such as Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune, who feel that the dangers of marijuana use have been overblown and
argue that it should be legalized for medicinal purposes. However, whether or not the detrimental effects of marijuana are justified when supervised by a licensed professional for medical purposes is
basically another issue. As Joseph Califano of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse points out, "The medical benefits and risks of marijuana...are matters for doctors, scientists and the
Food and Drug Administration" (Califano). The issue that most concerns Califano is the health impact that marijuana has on young people and it is this issue that provides the basic
argument against marijuana legalization. Califano specifically focuses on the issue of marijuana as a gateway drug and cites statistics that show that marijuana use can be a "gateway" to
wider drug addiction. His organization has analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control, as well as from the 1995 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. This evaluation has revealed that adolescents
who drank alcoholic beverages, smoked cigarettes and used marijuana at least once a month were 16 times more likely to go onto using cocaine or heroin (Califano). Furthermore, statistics show
